When determining the best health plan for you, you may first want to review Wellmark's three overall plan types:
  Blue Advantage® Plans (HMO)  Alliance SelectSM Plans (PPO)  Short-Term BlueSM 
Plan Overview
 Lower premiums. Covers in-network services. Generally, there are no out-of-network benefits except for emergency services and accidental injuries. Covers most in- and out-of-state medical expenses with minimal cost-sharing for office services. Limited temporary coverage (for 1 to 6 month terms)

Provider Network

To see which networks your doctors are in, Find a Doctor or Hospital.

Blue Advantage Network

  • You must select a Primary Care Practitioner (PCP) for your care. Women can also select an OB/GYN.
  • No benefits for out-of-network services unless care is for a medical emergency, accidental injury, Wellmark approved referral, or guest membership.
  • 96% of physicians and 100% of hospitals in Iowa participate in the network.
  • Available in all Iowa counties except Allamakee, Fayette, and Winneshiek.

Alliance Select Network

  • You can see in- or out-of-network providers, but your costs are lower when care is received from providers in the Alliance Select network.
  • 99% of physicians and 100% of hospitals in Iowa participate in the Alliance Select network

Underwritten by Blue Advantage plans are underwritten by Wellmark Health Plans of Iowa, Inc. Alliance Select Plans are underwritten by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa.
